American Sam Querrey recorded his first ATP-level victory on clay when he beat Luis Horna of Peru 7-6(5), 6-4 in one hour and 36 minutes at the Estoril Open on Sunday.
Querrey battled back from a 3-1 second set deficit to take his place in the second round.
The World No. 66, who has reached quarterfinals at Memphis and Las Vegas this year, struck 10 aces and won 66 per cent of serves.
Horna, who clinched his second career ATP crown in Vina del Mar (d. Massu) two months ago, falls to 11-7 this season. The 26-year-old won 63 of 127 points in total.
Querrey will next meet either No. 8 seed Gael Monfils of France or Argentine Juan Monaco, who captured his maiden ATP title in Buenos Aires (d. di Mauro).
Igor Kunitsyn ensured the ATP tournament debut of Pedro Sousa would be one to forget, after the Russian knocked out the local wild card 6-1, 6-1 in just 50 minutes.
World No. 90 Kunitsyn recorded his first ATP-level match since Las Vegas in February, by winning 30 of 46 points. The 25-year-old improves to 6-9 this year.
Lisbon-born Sousa played four Futures events last year and picked up eight ATP Rankings points. The 18-year-old is currently ranked No. 974.
Kunitsyn will next meet either No. 4 seed Fernando Gonzalez, the Australian Open finalist, or Paul-Henri Mathieu of France.
