In the absence of regular partner Frantisek Cermak, Leos Friedl began their defense of the Estoril Open doubles title with Lucas Arnold on Tuesday.
The Czech-Argentine duo, seeded No. 3 for the 17th edition of the Portuguese tournament, eased past Ashley Fisher and Jordan Kerr 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Friedl holds a 9-3 record in the tournament, while Arnold reached the semifinals in 2003 (w/ Hood) and 2004 (w/ Calleri).
Fourth seeds Tomas Cibulec and Jaroslav Levinsky also advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-6, 7-5, 10-8 (Match TB) win over Gilles Muller and Christophe Rochus.
The teams exchanged three breaks of serve each in the 83-minute encounter.
Czechs Cibulec and Levinsky are playing together for the second time this season having reached the semifinals at the Wroclaw Challenger in Poland in February.
In the women’s doubles competition, Gisela Dulko and Maria Sanchez Lorenzo beat Vera Douchevina and Virginie Razzano 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in one hour and 51 minutes.
Dulko and Sanchez Lorenzo managed to convert eight of 17 break points in the first round match, while Dushevina and Razzano won six of nine.
Bad light curtailed Conchita Martinez Granados and Maria Vento-Kabchi’s bid for a quarterfinal berth with the pair leading Bryanne Stewart and Bethanie Mattek 7-6(4), 3-1.
