Top-seeded Italian Fabio Fognini kick-started his campaign for qualification into the main Estoril Open singles draw with a 6-0, 6-0 first round victory over Portuguese wild card Joao Silverio on Saturday.
Fognino won 48 of 57 points against the 16-year-old wild card, wrapping up victory in 32 minutes.
Joining the player ranked No. 276 in the INDESIT ATP Rankings will be No. 2 seed Michal Przysiezny. The Pole recorded a 6-1, 6-1 victory in 42 minutes over Portuguese wild card, Helder Araujo.
Przysiezny will now meet another local, Tiago Godinho, in the second round. Godinho defeated countryman Diego Moto 6-2, 6-4.
It was a good day for all seeded players at Estadio Nacional, with third-seeded Italian Leonardo Azzaro matching Fognini’s 6-0, 6-0 scoreline with a 33-minute win over Goncalo Henriqu Pereira.
Fourth seed Gustavo Maracaccio, No. 5 seed Pedro Sousa, No. 6 seed Jeremy Chardy, No. 7 seed David Luque and Didac Perez, seeded eighth, also triumphed.
Of the 19 Portuguese players entered in the 32-man qualification competition, 13 were sent home on day one.
