Second seed and defending champion Magui Serna of Spain advanced to the second round of the Estoril Open with a straight sets victory over Elena Tatarkova. Serna, the 24-year-old from Las Palmas, Spain, earned a meeting with Hungary's Pedula Mandula with a 6-3, 6-1 win against lucky loser Tatarkova.

Mandula booked her place in the last 16 with a victory over Portuguese wild card Frederica Piedade by the same scoreline.

Also progressing on day two at the Estadio Nacional was Spain's Maria Sanchez Lorenzo, who upset No. 8 seed Patricia Wartusch 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 on court Central. The 25-year-old will now face Stephanie Cohen Aloro of France, who overcame Russian starlet Maria Kirilenko on Monday.

Elsewhere, fourth seed Rita Grande had to retire from her first round match against Switzerland's Emmanuelle Gagliardi after straining an adductor muscle after losing the first set 6-3. Fifth seed Henrieta Nagyova progressed however, defeating Conchita Martinez Granados 6-1, 6-3.
